What You Should Know About Missing Teeth

It is not unusual for a patient to come to me with missing teeth. When that is the case, I take the time to explain about dental implants. Recent technological breakthroughs have solidified dental implants as the leading standard of care to replace teeth. Not only do they perform like real teeth in basic functions, but dental implants serve as a permanent solution to bone loss, which can occur when teeth are missing. The implant acts as a root, anchoring the tooth to the bone. Chewing and normal use simulates the real tooth, keeping the surrounding bone and tissue active and healthy.

If you are missing a tooth and don’t replace it, the jawbone can atrophy. When this occurs, the face takes on a sunken and hollow look. Dental implants protect against this deterioration and atrophy. A dental implants replace the root of the tooth, furnishing the stimulation to keep the jaw healthy.

From a cosmetic point of view, dental implants can now look as great as cosmetic dentistry. In some cases, implants can change an area of missing teeth into a whole new, cosmetically enhanced smile! After the titanium or zirconia post is implanted into the jaw, a ceramic crown is placed on the post. These new teeth can be designed to improve or complete a patient‘s smile.

After the procedure is completed, patients can eat virtually anything without worrying about their new dental implants. Under the care of a trained cosmetic dentist, the difference between the implants and your natural teeth are undetectable.

I encourage patients to do their research about dental implants and come talk to me so we can determine the best course of action.
